Oh
and don't worry about getting cold, just do as the locals:
take a bottle of local vodka with you to warm you up!
|
| WHERE: |
 |
| Lithuania
is the southernmost of the
three Baltic States (the other two being Latvia and
Estonia) and is snuggled between Latvia, Poland, Russia
and Belorussian on the south coast of the Baltic Sea. |
|
| Its
capital is Vilnius with
the incredible UNESCO listed Old Town. More baroque
buildings than any city, other than Rome, and a
fascinating selection of bars, clubs and restaurants (many
of them in 15th century cellars). |
|
|
Nida,
located
on the western edge of Lithuania, a couple of miles from
the Russian border, and close to the mid-point
of the Neringa Spit, is a natural sand spit and
nature reserve with rolling dunes and pine forests.
The spit separates the Baltic Sea from the beautiful
Curonian Lagoon, with a wealth of fish waiting to be
caught by you!
|
|

|
BURBOT
(Lota Lota)
With
its elongated body, the only freshwater cod is almost eel
like in appearance.
Sadly
extinct from the UK, the Burbot spawns in mid-winter under
the ice and can grow up to 20kg.
Also
known as Dogfish or Freshwater Cod.
|
| SMELT
(Osmerus eperlanus): |

|
|
The
highlight of the trip is Nightfishing on the frozen lagoon
under an oil lamp. A truly unique and unforgettable
experience.
Before
swimming up Lithuania's longest river, The Nemunas,
to spawn in the spring, the Smelt gather in the Curonian
Lagoon, where for centuries they have been fished by
appreciative locals in midwinter as a source of fresh
food. You can expect to catch tens, if not hundreds,
of these, all of which can be cooked on the ice while
fishing! Goes down perfectly with a glass of local
vodka!
While
fishing, do not be surprised to hear locals create an
"hypnotic orchestra" by tapping sticks under the
water to lull the smelt into their nets.
|
 |
PIKE
(Esox Lucius)
One
of the most popular sports fish throughout Europe.
Catching them on a beautiful open frozen lake in the wilds
of Western Lithuania has to be a better story than the
eternal "one that got away"!.
