Day for Vilnius city tour. The Old Town, historical centre of Vilnius, is one of the largest in Eastern Europe (360 ha). The most valuable historic and cultural heritage is concentrated here. The buildings in the old town - there are about 1.5 thousand of them - were built in a number of different centuries, therefore, it is a mixture of all European architectural styles. Although Vilnius is often called a baroque city, here you will find some buildings of gothic, renaissance and other styles. The main sights of the city are the Gediminas Castle and the Cathedral Square, symbols of the capital. Their combination is also a gateway to the historic centre of the capital. Because of its uniqueness, the Old Town of Vilnius was inscribed on the UNESCO World’s Heritage List. You will be able to visit the main sites of Vilnius: Vilnius Cathedral and its square, National Museum of Lithuania - the largest depository of the Lithuanian historical heritage, where museum valuables reflecting the cultural history of the country are collected, preserved, studied and popularised on a systematic basis, Gediminas Castle, the University campus, Pilies street with the 16-18th century historical and architectural monuments, Gothic corner of Vilnius with St Anne's and Bernardine churches, the former Town Hall square, the Gates of Dawn with a miraculous icon of Virgin Mary, the 17th century Baroque church of St Peter and Paul. Visit to KGB museum.
Later drive to step on the Geographical Centre of Europe. In 1989, a group of French scientists from the institute announced that the geographical centre of Europe was just to the north of the Lithuanian capital Vilnius – 26 kilometres to be exact – near the village of Purnuškės. On 1 May 2004, the date Lithuania entered the European Union, the sculptor Gediminas Jokūbonis unveiled at the site his composition of a column of white granite, the top of which is rimmed by a crown of stars. In this symbolic way, Lithuania’s historical links with Europe and the poignant return of Lithuania to the family of European nations was approved once more. All Europeans are invited to visit the site of the geographical centre of Europe in Lithuania, at least once in their lives.
Overnight in Vilnius.
