18 Lithuania: Palanga
This is a cracking little resort town with a white, sandy beach, pine forests, sand dunes and fizzing nightlife. There are dozens of bars and restaurants along pedestrianised Basanaviciaus Street, everyone speaks English, and it’s as cheap as you’ll find in Europe. Behind the beach are the dune-side Botanical Gardens and a terrific amber museum, while the big day out is a drive down the Curonian Spit, a fragile frond of sand dunes, forests and villages. Head here between mid-June and mid-September, when temperatures are in the high twenties. Best for: a beach party with a difference.
Details: stay at the 46-room Palanga Hotel (00 370 8460 41414, www.palangahotel.lt; doubles from £102, B&B, in summer), a Scandinavian designer-style place surrounded by pine trees. With luck, direct flights to Palanga will be reinstated; until then, Ryanair (0871 246 0000, ryanair.com) flies to Kaunas, 150 miles away.

Spa-hotels have been developed in Lithuania for the last 10 years. 10 years ago there were mostly sanatoria built in the former Soviet Union and were lower by the level of service than the European resorts.
Lithuania has all opportunities to develop spa-resorts. There are 8 mineral water resorts in Palanga and they have the stock of medical peat for about 50 years. Today there are available spa-services in such hotels in Palanga as Vanagupe, Pavetra, Palanga. In the nearest future they are going to build the greatest spa-complex “A Capella Spa Palanga”. Palanga is not the first spa-resort in Lithuania. There are also spa-hotels in Birshtonas and Druskininkai. One of the best spa-hotels is SPAVilnius 4* hotel with a restaurant and a conference hall for 400 people.
Birshtonas is a health resort where the specialists use unique methods of health improving after injuries and operations. In such sanatorium as “Versme” and “Tulpe” people can improve their health and view the nature and the beauty of the Nemunas.
There are lots of private hotels in picturesque places near the beautiful lakes in Lithuania. Spa-services and beauty saloons are opened in the hotels of Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipeda. The cost of a room in spa-hotels in Lithuania is practically the same as in Europe. It is about 30- 100 Euros for one room in 3-4* hotels. The cost of a room in SPAVilnius 4* in Druskininkai is about 90 Euros. There are wonderful spa-hotels in Nida (“Aguona” and “Zuvedra”) and Zarasai (“Banga” hotel). But the spa-services there are not so various there. |
